Welcome to the
“Why I Love Libraries” TCF Holiday Card Art Contest
Overview
The Commons Foundation (TCF) is the official fundraising partner of the City of Larkspur with a charter to raise funds to build a new Larkspur Library at the corner of Rose Lane and Doherty Drive. As we near our fundraising goal, we are excited about bringing a vision of a wonderful new, modern library to our community!
We have been thrilled by the support we have received from the community, including Larkspur Library, Friends of the Larkspur Library, Drawbridge, Larkspur-Corte Madera Schools including Neil Cummins Elementary, The Cove School Elementary and Henry C. Hall Middle School, Marin Primary School, St. Patrick School, Bacich Elementary School, Kent Middle School, Marin Country Day School, Masterworks Kids Art school, BurritoVille, Southern Marin Mother’s Group, Toy Crazy, Barnes & Noble, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Judy Hussen DDS, John E Boland DDS, Copperfield’s Bookstore, and the Book Passage.
We invite all school-aged kids in in Marin County (grades K-8) to submit original art that conveys “Why I Love Libraries.”
Art can be submitted in four categories:
PHYSICAL ART
Drawing
Collage
Mixed Media
DIGITAL ART
2D/3D Art
Photography
POETRY
VIDEO
Any Type of Video
When designing your art, writing your poem or creating your video, think about why you love libraries. What do they mean to you and why are they important? It could be a memory you have, a story, or an image that depicts a feeling. Use your imagination!
Winners will receive special prizes and recognition, and winning artwork will be featured on TCF’s official 2022 holiday card, website and email newsletters!

Prizes
- All finalists and winners will receive special prizes and will be invited to an awards ceremony with Larky, the Larkspur Library mascot, where we will take your picture, offer praise for your designs on video, and present you with an honorary award.
- The winning designs will be used as TCF’s official 2022 holiday card and on our website for the holidays.
- The finalists and winners will be announced in a press release and will also be featured in our monthly TCF email newsletter.
Who Can Enter
- School kids grades K-8 in Marin are eligible to participate in this contest.
- Homeroom teachers and art teachers are encouraged to do this as a class activity! You can submit entries in bulk if you have students create their entries during class time.
- Parents and guardians are encouraged to work with their children at home.
How to Enter
There are four categories: physical artwork, digital artwork, poetry, and 30-second video. A winner and two runners-up will be selected in each category, for each age group (K-5 and 6-8).
Bring or mail your physical artwork, digital artwork, or poetry to the Larkspur Library between
October 1, 2022 -November 1, 2022.

If dropping off your entry in person, the Larkspur Library staff will be happy to accept your entry. The Larkspur Library is located at 400 Magnolia Ave. and is open Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 6pm.
For video submissions, please upload your 30-second video file to this Google Drive no later than 6pm on November 1, 2022. Poetry submissions may also be uploaded via this Google Drive folder.
IMPORTANT: For all submissions, please include a note that includes the child’s name, grade, school, and parent or guardian contact information. This part is extremely important so that we can contact you if your child is selected as a winner! For video submissions, please state this information slowly and clearly before you begin the video entry. A description of the design is welcome but not required.
Art pieces become the property of The Commons Foundation.
Deadline for receiving entries is 6pm on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.
Design Guidelines
When designing your art, writing your poem, or submitting a video, think about why you love libraries. It could be a memory you have, or an image that depicts a feeling. Use your imagination!
Physical art: All mediums are welcome – crayon, paint, pen, collage, mixed media, etc.
Digital art: Digital Drawing/Painting, 2D/3D Art, and photography are all welcome.
Video: any video format of 30 seconds or less about why you love libraries will qualify. You can film yourself or your child saying why you love libraries, or you can create an animation or use other resources to create your video.
Poetry: any length poem about why you love libraries is eligible.
Evaluation Process
Every art piece will be evaluated by a specially selected team of judges. Two finalists and one winner will be selected in each category for each age group.
